Our Brief History
We know that Jacob Schaeffer, came from Germany about 1704 from that Province called the Rhine. History tells us that people from that area mostly spoke Pennsylvania Dutch. Jacob his wife and their four living sons; Solomon, Jacob, John George, and Charles came to America in 1704 and settled in Northhampton County, Pennsylvania. John George Schaeffer, would for a time, take up the tanning trade near Philadelphia where he met Elizabeth Beaver (earlier spelled Beiber) and they were married on January 15, 1773. After a few years, he returned home to farming in Northhampton County and in April, 1822, their family, 20 in number, moved to Fayette County, New York, where he had purchased 300 acres of land and lived there until his death, January 4, 1843. One of his sons, Michael Schaeffer, born February 9, 1804 married Mary Elizabeth Gambee on January 18, 1829 in Seneca County, NY and they lived there until October 1843 when they, along with their nine chiildren, moved to Milan Township, Ohio. It is Michael Schaeffer's branch of the family that we continue to maintain the genealogy records and have consistently held a Schaeffer Family Reunion for the past 104 years in the Lorain, Ohio area.
